A Qualitative Assessment of the Trends, Distribution and Sources of Methane in South Africa

Methane (CH4) is the second most important greenhouse gas (GHG) in terms of its concentration and impact on climate. In present study, we investigate trends, sources distribution CH4 South Africa. The study uses satellite datasets from Sentinel-5P Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS). also credible World Bank, Statistics Africa Global Initiative (GMI). results show an increasing trend 1970–1989. A turning point observed 1989, where a decreasing 1989–2001. An then 2001 to 2021. high northern interior parts that influenced by seasonal variations. September–October–November (SON) season has highest GMI indictors agricultural activities, i.e., involving livestock, are greatest emitters Africa, followed landfill sites. From livestock data, sheep CH4. concern efforts need be made drastically reduce emissions, if meet 1997 Kyoto Protocol, 2015 Paris Agreement, sustainable development goal 13 (SDG 13) COP26 outcome agreements.
